Daniel 6 has the classic story of Daniel being persecuted for being really good at his job. His jealous coworkers could only find fault with his spiritual practices so they rallied to get a silly law passed so that anyone who prayed to anything other than the king would killed by vicious lions.
Of course the story goes that Daniel doesn't deviate from his devotion one dot and therefore the king is forced to carry out his silly law and throw Daniel to those mangy beasts. No, not his coworkers, the lions.
What hit me in my most recent reading was this verse:
Daniel 6:16 Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!"
Here is this pagan king who:
- I surmize by his desire to keep him alive, really liked Daniel and appreciated his work.
- Understood that even in the midst of Daniel's work for the king, Daniel was serving the Lord continually.
What would it take for your boss to say: "You are an incredible valuable employee and I don't want to loose you even if I look silly trying to keep you. And at the same time I realize that your not truly serving me, you're continually serving God."
Wow! I want to be that good.
